Food Sensitivity Testing:
What is the ALCAT?
ALCAT stands for "Antigen Leukocyte Cellular Antibody Test." This food sensitivity test measures for leukocyte cellular reactivity in whole blood. The test differs from standard allergy tests, such as skin tests, by using state of the art hematological instrumentation. ALCAT is most accurate for delayed reactions to foods and chemicals by measuring the presence if allergen specific IgE molecules. Standard allergy tests, or IgG tests are indicative of exposure but not necessarily intolerance.
How is testing done?
Testing is done on site by a licensed phlebotomist. After you blood is collected in the office, we send it to the lab for testing. The ALCAT can identify over 300 food, chemical and other substances associated with inflammation linked to chronic health problems.
How accurate is the ALCAT?
This minimally invasive blood test can accurately and reproducibly measure biological cellular reactivity in whole blood. Unlike standard IgG tests, which rely exclusively on a single immune pathway and merely detects exposure, the ALCAT test is the premier test for detecting fold, mold, and chemical sensitivity and intolerance. Studies show the ALCAT test to be 83.4% accurate with foods and 95% accurate with food additives, when compared with the "Gold Standard" - a double blind oral challenge. (ALCAT is a food sensitivity and intolerance test not an allergy test)
How does the ALCAT Work?
The ALCAT objectively measures changes in size and number of white blood cells in response to challenges with foods, chemicals and other environmental stimuli. Scores are generated by relating the patient's own blood without test substrate to their tested, reactive blood. Results are then separated into four categories:
- Severe Intolerance
- Moderate Intolerance
- Mild Intolerance
- Acceptable Foods
A color coded report is accessible online or by hard copy the prescribing doctor. Included within the results is an individual diet rotation of acceptable foods.
Who needs the ALCAT?
If you suffer the affects of chronic inflammatory responses and haven't figured out the cause to by gluten, dairy, or wheat. These food sensitivities can cause symptoms several days after a food is consumed. If you suffer from migraines, chronic headaches, fibromyalgia, aching joints, arthritis, fatigue, gastrointestinal distress, eczema, other skin conditions, depression, anxiety, bloating, and weight gain then you should consider getting the ALCAT.
